Granite steps are commonly available in standard sizes such as 900 x 400 x 40 mm, 1000 x 350 x 50 mm and 1200 x 400 x 50 mm, with typical depths ranging from 350 to 400 mm and thickness options varying between 30 mm for paving-style treads and up to 150 mm for solid step units used in more structural applications. These sizes are widely used across the UK for outdoor granite steps, garden steps and entrance installations.

The choice of size will depend on the overall design, ground conditions and required step depth, with larger formats often preferred for modern layouts and narrower units used where space is limited or for more traditional garden settings. As with all natural stone products, it is advisable to allow a small additional quantity when planning your project.

Granite is a dense and durable material, but like all natural stone, its slip resistance depends largely on the surface finish. Polished or smooth finishes can become slippery when wet and are not suitable for outdoor steps.

A properly compacted base is essential to prevent movement, settlement and long-term structural issues.

Each step should be set level on a full mortar bed or securely supported base, with adequate support beneath and behind the unit. Full mortar bed installation is strongly recommended for all granite steps to ensure long-term stability and avoid movement over time. A slight forward fall is recommended to allow water to drain away from the surface and prevent pooling.

A breathable, penetrating sealer is typically preferred, as it allows the stone to remain vapour-permeable while providing protection against water, dirt and organic growth such as moss or algae.

Routine maintenance is straightforward and involves regular sweeping to remove debris, along with occasional cleaning using water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Acidic or harsh cleaning products should be avoided, as they may damage the surface or affect the performance of the sealer over time.

Granite steps are an excellent choice for a wide range of outdoor applications, including gardens, entrance areas, pathways and high-traffic locations, due to their exceptional strength, durability and resistance to wear.

As one of the hardest natural stones, granite performs particularly well in the UK climate, offering strong resistance to frost, moisture and daily use. It is commonly used for front entrances, sloped gardens and commercial settings where long-term performance is required.
