Split face tiles bring the character of natural stone into wall design through a layered, textured surface that creates genuine depth, shadow and movement. This collection is designed for customers who want the appearance of traditional stacked stone without using heavy masonry blocks, making it suitable for feature walls, fireplaces, garden walls, entrance areas and selected exterior cladding projects across UK homes and commercial spaces.
This range includes natural stone panels made from materials such as slate, quartz, marble, sandstone, limestone and travertine, with different colours and surface textures to suit both modern and more traditional designs. Light quartz and cream tones can soften a wall and make the space feel warmer, while darker slate colours create a stronger architectural contrast for contemporary interiors and outdoor features.
Customers can choose between larger 550 x 150 mm split face tiles and compact 360 x 100 mm split face tiles. Both formats are commonly produced with interlocking edges, helping the panels connect neatly and giving the finished wall a continuous stacked stone appearance.
Our parent company, Westone, has been involved in the production of natural stone split face cladding panels since 2009, with direct control over stone sourcing, cutting, splitting and panel assembly. This long-established supply route allows us to maintain consistent quality, stable UK availability and competitive pricing without unnecessary middlemen.
This collection is very different from low-cost porcelain split face effect tiles or printed imitation panels. Those cheaper alternatives may try to copy the appearance of stacked stone, but they often lack the natural depth, weight and character that make real stone walling distinctive. Our split face tiles are made from genuine natural stone, offering a more authentic surface, stronger visual impact and a finish that clearly stands apart from mass-produced porcelain copies.
We wholesale self-produced products at extreme discounts to landscapers and builders.
Split Face Tiles Installation Guide
Correct installation is essential for the long-term performance of split face tiles and natural stone cladding. Our installation guide explains the recommended methods for preparing a suitable wall substrate, using flexible stone adhesive, applying full adhesive coverage, back-buttering the panels, planning corners and avoiding common installation mistakes. Split face tiles are different from standard wall tiles because they are heavier natural stone cladding panels with textured surfaces, uneven backing and interlocking layouts. Customers may also read our split face tiles installation advice for further practical information.
The guide is based on our own practical industry experience and is intended as a general reference for UK interior feature walls, fireplace walls, garden walls and exterior stone cladding projects. We offer both split face tiles and stone cladding Z panels as part of our stone cladding Z tiles & clad panels range, with each providing a distinct way to enhance interior and exterior walls.
Split Face Tiles - Frequently Asked Questions
What Are True Split Face Tiles?
True Split Face Tiles are Z tile panels made from natural stone, and their essential feature is that the stone is SPLIT, CUT AND BONDED TOGETHER to create a finished wall cladding panel. Each panel is made from linear stone strips, cut to varying depths and sometimes mixed widths. This real stone construction gives the surface genuine 3D relief, natural shadowing and a layered stacked-stone appearance. The Z design also helps achieve a more seamless installation, something porcelain-effect split face tiles cannot truly imitate.
True Split Face Tiles should therefore be made from natural stone materials such as slate, quartzite, marble, sandstone, limestone or granite. The real value of the product is in the natural stone texture and tones, the genuine 3D structure, and the offset interlocking effect that helps create a more seamless wall finish.
Some products on the market are described as effect split face tiles or manufactured split face tiles, but in reality they have not gone through a true SPLIT FACE process. They are usually made by moulding, embossing or printing a stone-effect pattern onto a porcelain tile body. Most of these products do not have a real Z tile interlocking appearance. They simply show a split face tile pattern in product photos or website images.
Where Can Split Face Tiles Be Used?
Split Face Tiles can be used for both external and internal wall cladding projects. Outdoors, they are commonly used on garden walls, boundary walls, exterior feature walls, façades and entrance areas. Indoors, they are suitable for living room feature walls, kitchen walls and selected bathroom areas, including shower walls where the correct installation method is used.
What Is a Fair Price for Real Split Face Tiles and Imitation?
For genuine natural stone Split Face Tiles, a reasonable price is usually around £28 to £34 per m², including UK 20% VAT and free delivery to around 95% of mainland UK areas. This reflects our practical direct-import supply model, covering overseas production, shipping to the UK, UK handling and delivery costs.
Effect or manufactured products are not true natural stone Split Face Tiles. Their fair market price should normally be around £15 to £18 per m² (Even top-grade Italian imitation tiles with a real 3D effect and interlocking system are only around £33 per m².), including VAT and delivery, usually based on full-pallet purchases. If these products are sold at prices close to genuine natural stone split face tiles, buyers should compare the material, structure and surface finish very carefully.
If prices are much higher than these ranges, the extra cost is often caused by additional distribution layers rather than a major difference in the product itself. Our pricing principle is to offer fair, transparent and realistic value for genuine natural stone Split Face Tiles.
What Wall Surface Is Suitable for Split Face Tiles?
Split Face Tiles should be installed onto a strong, stable and properly prepared wall surface. Suitable backgrounds normally include concrete, brickwork, cement render and suitable tile backer boards. A solid background is important because the panels have weight and need proper support for long-term performance.
Split Face Tiles are relatively heavy. If they are to be fixed onto standard plasterboard, the wall must be checked carefully to make sure it has enough load-bearing strength. In most cases, a stronger and more stable backing surface is recommended.
Are Split Face Tiles Suitable for Bathrooms and Shower Walls?
Split Face Tiles can be used in bathrooms and even on shower walls, provided the correct installation method is followed. The installation principle is similar to mosaic tiles or certain tile sheets. The key point is that the underlying wall substrate must be properly waterproofed, especially in bathrooms and shower areas.
Natural stone has texture and a degree of porosity, so moisture can pass through the surface. If the wall behind the tiles has not been properly waterproofed, long-term moisture exposure may damage the underlying structure. For wet areas, the focus should be on waterproofing the installation substrate, not relying on the tiles themselves to be waterproof.
Do Split Face Tiles Need Sealing or Grouting?
In most standard applications, we do not usually recommend sealing split face tiles as a compulsory step. However, where extra protection is preferred, a breathable natural stone sealer can be used to help reduce water absorption and staining. It should always be tested first, and the chosen sealer should keep the stone looking natural rather than making it darker or coated.
Split face tile panels do not require traditional grouting. They are normally fitted closely together to create a continuous stacked stone appearance. This no-visible-grout-joint finish is one of the main visual features of split face wall cladding.
Why Are Your Split Face Tiles So Competitively Priced?
Our prices are competitive because we directly represent our overseas factory and sell our own natural stone Split Face Tiles in the UK. By reducing the traditional multi-layer distribution chain, we can offer prices much closer to the source.
As more manufacturers establish direct routes into the UK market, prices naturally return to a more reasonable level. Our pricing reflects the true value of split face tiles rather than inflated retail prices created by several middlemen. In terms of quality, we rely on an established production system, stable UK stock movement and long-term experience in natural stone manufacturing.
All split face tiles listed on our website are VAT included. We also offer free delivery to most mainland UK areas. Some remote or harder-to-reach postcodes may still require a delivery surcharge depending on location and access.
