Granite Paving - Frequently Asked Questions

Are Granite Paving Slabs Good?

Yes. Granite paving slabs are a strong, hard-wearing and long-lasting choice for patios, paths, steps and other outdoor areas. Granite has relatively low water absorption and good resistance to wear, frost and changing British weather.

For outdoor use, choose granite with a textured finish, such as flamed or bush-hammered, and install it on a correctly prepared base with suitable drainage.

Is Granite Good for a Patio?

Yes. Granite is an excellent patio material because it is dense, durable and resistant to regular foot traffic and weathering. Its clean appearance works particularly well in contemporary gardens, while different colours and formats can also suit traditional landscaping.

A flamed or otherwise textured surface should be used outdoors, and the slabs must be laid on a stable full mortar bed over a properly prepared sub-base.

What Are the Downsides of Granite Paving Slabs?

The main disadvantages of granite paving are its weight, hardness and installation difficulty. Granite slabs can be heavy to handle and usually require suitable lifting methods and diamond cutting equipment. Installation may therefore take more time and skill than with some softer paving materials.

Granite can also cost more than basic concrete paving or some sandstone options. Smooth, polished or honed granite may become slippery outdoors, so a flamed, bush-hammered or otherwise textured finish should be selected for patios, paths and steps.

Is Granite Paving Slippery When Wet?

Granite paving can be slippery when wet if it has a smooth, polished or honed surface. Outdoor granite with a flamed, bush-hammered or similarly textured finish provides substantially better grip and is the appropriate choice for patios, paths and steps.

Surface finish is not the only factor. Algae, moss, wet leaves, mud and poor drainage can make any paving slippery, so regular cleaning and effective drainage remain important.

Does Granite Paving Need to Be Sealed?

Granite paving does not always need to be sealed. It is a dense natural stone with relatively low water absorption, and many outdoor granite patios perform well without regular sealing.

A compatible penetrating sealer may be used where additional stain resistance is wanted, especially around outdoor kitchens and dining areas. Test any treatment on a spare piece first because sealers can alter the stone’s appearance.

How Long Does Granite Paving Last?

Correctly specified and installed granite paving can last for several decades. Granite is one of the hardest natural paving stones and is widely used in patios, streets, public spaces and commercial landscapes where long-term resistance to wear is required.

Its service life depends on the sub-base, mortar bed, jointing, drainage, stone thickness and expected load. Installation failure is more likely to shorten its life than normal surface wear.

How Much Does Granite Paving Cost?

The cost of granite paving depends on the colour, finish, slab size, thickness and pack quantity. The live price shown with each product is the most accurate material price because stock and transport costs can change.

For a fully installed patio, the total cost must also include excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage, bedding mortar, slurry primer, jointing, cutting and labour. Difficult access, complex patterns and extensive ground preparation can increase the final price substantially.

What Thickness of Granite Paving Is Typically Used?

Granite slabs around 20 mm thick are commonly used for residential patios, paths and other areas carrying normal foot traffic when they are installed on a suitable full mortar bed.

Driveways and heavier commercial applications may require thicker granite, often around 30–50 mm, or smaller-format granite setts. The correct specification depends on the slab size, base construction, bedding method and expected load.

Can Granite Paving Be Used for Driveways?

Yes, but the granite format and construction must be suitable for vehicle loading. Granite setts and correctly specified thicker slabs are generally more appropriate for driveways than large 20 mm patio slabs.

Driveway performance depends on stone thickness and dimensions, sub-base depth, edge restraint, bedding, jointing, drainage and installation quality. A specification intended only for pedestrian patios should not automatically be used for vehicles.

Is Granite Paving Easy to Maintain?

Yes. Granite paving is relatively low maintenance because it is dense, hard-wearing and resistant to normal outdoor weathering. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with water and a suitable mild stone cleaner are usually sufficient.

Remove leaves, soil, algae and moss before they build up, particularly in shaded or poorly drained areas. Avoid harsh or unsuitable acidic cleaners unless the product has been confirmed as compatible with the stone and jointing material.
