Clay brick pavers are widely used across UK patios, pathways and driveways for their durability, colour stability and traditional appearance. With slim formats such as 200 x 50 x 60, both the laying pattern and installation method play a critical role in achieving a precise and long-lasting finish.
Understanding Laying Patterns
The laying pattern determines not only how the paving looks but also how it performs over time. Slim clay pavers introduce more joints per square metre, making pattern selection more visible and structurally important.
Common Laying Patterns
Basket Weave
An alternating arrangement of horizontal and vertical pairs. This creates a traditional and decorative finish, often used in courtyards and feature areas.
Stretcher Bond
A simple offset pattern where each row is staggered. Clean and efficient, it is widely used for patios and pathways.
45° Herringbone
A highly interlocking pattern set at 45°, ideal for driveways and areas exposed to vehicle loads.
90° Herringbone
A structured layout with strong interlock, offering both durability and a more formal appearance.
How to Install Clay Brick Pavers
Installation begins with a properly prepared sub-base, typically MOT Type 1, compacted to provide structural support. A sharp sand bedding layer is then used to level the surface before laying begins.
It is essential to set up straight guideline strings along the laying direction. These lines ensure consistent alignment and prevent deviation as the work progresses.
Slim clay pavers should be laid tightly along the guide lines. There is no need to deliberately control joint widths. Natural micro joints will form consistently during installation.
Practical Installation Guidance
Proper compaction is essential at every stage, including the sub-base and jointing process. Edge restraints must be installed to prevent lateral movement.
Jointing sand should be fully brushed into the gaps and compacted to stabilise the surface.
Our slim clay brick pavers are pre-mixed at source using a controlled blending process. This means there is no need to mix packs during installation. Simply lay in sequence to achieve a consistent natural colour variation.
Do Clay Pavers Fade or Require Sealing?
Clay pavers are colourfast, with colour formed during the firing process and running through the body of the material. This ensures long-term colour stability in outdoor conditions.
We do not recommend sealing. Clay pavers are naturally breathable and perform well in both wet and dry conditions without additional treatment.
Why Slim Clay Pavers Are Different
The 200 x 50 x 60 format increases joint density, creating a more detailed and refined surface. It also allows greater flexibility in layout and better control when forming curves or edges.
Conclusion
By combining the right laying pattern with correct installation methods, clay brick pavers provide a durable and visually distinctive paving solution suitable for long-term use.
